Silicone Modified Polyester
Are SMP Corrugated Metal Panels Right For You?
When you're deciding upon a metal roofing color an important decision is which type of paint system to use. There are two paint systems that are used regularly on corrugated metal, SMP and Kynar/PVDF. Choosing between the two systems is a balancing act between price and performance.
Think of this as the good, better, best model. Polyester paints which are rarely used are good, SMP is better, and Kynar® is best. The main advantage of SMP painted panels is they will cost less and are available in lighter gauges. The main disadvantage is that they have less resistance to UV exposure and will fade and chalk at a greater rate. Both paint systems will have extended warranties that differ in what is covered and the amount of time it's covered for.
SMP Painted Panels Are Best If:
- Commercial or agricultural projects
- Exposed fastener panels in a 26 gauge
- Have a smaller budget and are looking for the least expensive painted corrugated metal.
- Neutral and earth tone colors such as white, tan, and beige. Color fade is less noticeable on lighter colors.
