Two Sister Bosses, a Sedona-based luxury hotel development company, is about to make that dream a reality for visitors to Sedona, Arizona with their upcoming project: Ambiente, A Landscape Hotel.
Ambiente, scheduled to open in May 2022, will make history as the first hotel of its kind to open in North America. The highly anticipated nature-focused hotel, which has been under construction for over five years, is built using only sustainable building materials. We recently caught up with Jennifer May, co-owner of Two Sister Bosses, to discuss Ambiente and how using metal helped achieve the landscape hotel’s desired aesthetic.
What Is A Landscape Hotel?
Landscape hotels are properties that are constructed to put the spotlight on its natural surroundings and the landscape’s features. They are built by doing as little to the existing topography as possible to preserve the authentic beauty of the area while reducing impact to the environment.
Though there are only a few landscape hotels that currently exist throughout the world, they all follow a modern, minimalist design approach. When executed correctly, the architecture blends into the natural surroundings so well that it nearly disappears into the landscape.
Ambiente, A Landscape Hotel Arrives In Sedona
Ambiente, the first landscape hotel to open in North America, is built to highlight the majestic scenery of Sedona. The hotel features 40 rooms, known as atriums, that are constructed to allow privacy while the hotel’s guests are fully immersed into nature.
The opening of Ambiente continues to be highly anticipated. While the luxury hotel’s opening had been previously pushed back, it’s official opening is now scheduled for May 2022.

Using Metal In Minimalist Architecture
Ambiente follows the core guidelines of minimalist architecture: sleek lines, no ornament, and the use of simple material like glass and steel. The modern looking atriums offer picture perfect views of Sedona. The remainder of each building is wrapped in rustic and black metal siding from Western States Metal Roofing.
When choosing the metal siding color for a project, some designers choose metal panels in bold colors to make their project pop and stand out. However, the goal for Ambiente was the exact opposite. The metal colors used for the Northern Arizona hotel were carefully picked to seamlessly blend in with the beauty of the high desert, so as not to distract from the natural surroundings.
“[Metal] fit the modern minimalism style that we love,” said Jennifer May, co-owner of Two Sister Bosses. “It also minimized the impact of the way that it looked in this landscape. It basically tucked the atriums into the landscape that was here.”
The colors that were used for Ambiente, Matte Midnight Black siding and Weathered Rustic, camouflage with the natural rocky scenery of Sedona. Metal colors for desert and mountainous areas work well with warm earthy tones that match the desert sands or neutral colors, such as black siding, that blend in well with nearly any type of background.

The black metal siding panels chosen were T-Groove, a flat siding panel with concealed fasteners for a smooth appearance, and ⅞” corrugated, a wavy panel that adds some visual interest with its rounded shape without being too distracting. The combination results in the ultimate design goal for Ambiente; a modern, minimalistic appearance.

A project like a landscape hotel focuses on nature, so using an eco-friendly building material such as metal is the perfect fit. Metal siding also comes with other benefits such as lasting 40-60 years and requiring very little maintenance. When the siding is inevitably at the end of its long lifespan, the material is 100% recyclable.
Prioritizing sustainability for Ambiente goes far beyond using environmentally-friendly construction materials. The vision for the landscape hotel’s operation is to have guests park their cars for the duration of their stay, and instead use more ‘green’ transportation options such as e-bikes, golf carts, and shuttles to nearby restaurants, retail areas, and hiking trails.

Metal is a versatile construction material. While it was used as siding for the Ambiente Resort, metal is very popular for roofing and can also be used for ceilings, fencing, accent walls, landscape edging and more.
