What Are Exposed Fastener Panels?

Exposed fastener metal roof and wall panels are designed so that the fasteners will pierce through the face of the metal panels and attach directly onto the structure. The fastener head will be visible and will not be concealed by the panel seam. 

Are Exposed Fastener Panels Right For Me?

Exposed fastener panels are the most affordable type of metal roofing and siding panel, the easiest to install, and are readily available.

The main disadvantage is that the fasteners penetrate the panels and pin the sheets in place. The sheets cannot expand and contract in the same manner as a standing seam panel. The screws may back themselves out and have to be re-tightened or replaced.

Do exposed fastener metal roofs leak?

Exposed fastener panels have thousands of screw holes that will penetrate the metal sheeting. The fasteners have a sealing washer that will compress after it's tightened. If the screw is over-tightened or under-tightened then it could leak. This is the number one cause of roof leaks. 

Here are three things that you can do to prevent roof leaks:

  1. Don't over-tighten or under-tighten your fasteners.
  2. Install all of your trim and flashings correctly.
  3. Use a high quality metal roofing underlayment.
